The olive, an organic crop by nature

Organic olive oil is good for the environment, but surely many products without that certification also have positive effects on our planet. Why is that?

Olive oil is organic by nature

Many small mills and family farms work with traditional practices, and it is common to use natural methods to regenerate the soil or fight pests. But there are other reasons that make our olive oil an inherently organic food. Let’s review them below.

The olive tree: a crop that protects the environment

It is important to note that the vast majority of olive varieties are adapted to our climate and land, and having been present in our region for years, the trees have developed natural resistance to common pests. Both factors minimize the use of products to increase yield, reduce the impact on fauna and flora, and, of course, on agricultural soil.

Locally produced olive oil: an ecological bonus

The olive oil we consume at home is almost always a national product. And it should remain so, because this also reduces the carbon footprint of its transport. This aspect is often excluded from ecological standards, and we should reflect more often on the need to consume local foods.

Nowadays, some bring organic foods from the other side of the world using a highly polluting mode of transport like airplanes. These long trips and the cold chains they require distort the ecological methodology, ultimately generating a higher carbon footprint than many non-organic products that are simply produced near their place of consumption.

The territory: another dimension in organic olive oil

If a region has been dedicated to olive cultivation for generations, the fields are already part of its ecosystem and landscape. Consuming olive oil produced in areas where it is a traditional crop helps maintain native flora and fauna and a human community that depends on the olive groves. In this case, we might not be consuming certified organic olive oil, but it is important to remember that behind every olive tree and mill, there are people like us who want their way of life and traditions to endure. And what better way to respect the land and its fruits than with the taste of a delicious organic extra virgin olive oil?
