Castillo de Canena presents the world’s first EVOO aged in Jerez barrels: the Arbequino Amontillado, born from the fusion of the complex and sublime nuances of a Jerez amontillado wine with the balanced and harmonious notes of young arbequina extra virgin olive oil.
Constant innovation is a hallmark of Castillo de Canena, and they have once again demonstrated it with this new creation. A unique EVOO in the world, presented in 250ml black glass bottles with labels showing the bond this product symbolizes between the tradition of olive oil and wine.
This union between extra virgin olive oil and Jerez wine also represents a collaboration between Castillo de Canena and Bodegas Lustau:
“Facing this fascinating challenge, we worked alongside our friends at Bodegas Lustau. They gifted us a 250-liter American oak barrel over half a century old, which contained an aged amontillado never before bottled by the Jerez winery”, said Francisco Vañó, General Director of Castillo de Canena, adding that “the expert Jerez masters decided to create this Amontillado Solera and leave it static to evolve over time”.
The Arbequino Amontillado, suggestive, evocative, and unique in its “kind”, is inspired by combining such a singular wine with Castillo de Canena’s young arbequina EVOO, which absorbs the Jerez wine nuances.
The production process of the Arbequino Amontillado is both art and craftsmanship: the Lustau barrel of aged amontillado wine is emptied, filled with young arbequina extra virgin olive oil, and left for several days until achieving the perfect symbiosis of Jerez wine and young Jaén oils. Multiple tests are conducted to ensure the quality this novelty, under the brand and guarantee of Castillo de Canena, deserves.
Tasting Notes
The tasting of the new Arbequino Amontillado features a surprising and evocative nose, with aromas of toasted nuts, noble woods, ripe fruit, and mushrooms, with a delicate hint of Jerez.
On the palate, it is gentle and elegant at first. Smooth and sweet, complex with a wide range of nuances: iodized notes, toasted hazelnuts, interwoven with ripe avocado memories. At the finish, the barrel wood stands out clearly, with an amontillado sensation and umami notes.
