The documentary "Jaén, Virgen & Extra" shows us the revolution experienced by Extra Virgin Olive Oils in the province of Jaén.
This film, directed by José Luis López Linares and produced by Lopez-Li Films, with the sponsorship of the Provincial Council and Caja Rural de Jaén, premiered last September 25 during the San Sebastián Film Festival, specifically in the Culinary Zinema section that combines cinema and gastronomy. This year, seven films participated in this section, in this case focusing on the great change experienced by the olive grove culture and olive oils of Jaén, which cultivates more than sixty million olive trees, a vast man-made forest.
José Luis López-Linares, a winner of several Goya Awards, began working on this project coinciding with last year's early olive harvest and the production of the first oils, showing the union of tradition and innovation, while also highlighting the international projection achieved by the extra virgin olive oils of the province of Jaén, the largest producer of this product in the world.
A True Revolution
With the beginning of the new century, a revolution started in Jaén based on one belief: the Picual, the most emblematic of its olives, could produce the best Extra Virgin Olive Oil in the world. This documentary delves into the challenges posed by this change through the eyes of the people of the Jaén olive groves, the chefs who have seen in this change a gastronomic revolution, the olive growers, and the consumers, revealing the hidden beauty of one of the most beautiful provinces in Spain.
The film introduces the various agents involved in its production, from producers and mills to chefs, who today are the main promoters of this product, showing at the same time their love for Jaén and its wonderful Extra Virgin Olive Oils.
The 90-minute documentary reflects this revolution that has taken place in just fifteen years in the province of Jaén and in the Picual variety, making it appreciated worldwide.
López-Linares stated: "With this film, we have learned many things: the virtues and benefits of olive oil, the olive grove landscape, the province of Jaén, its people, and the tremendous and positive change in the way it is produced, achieving great quality."
International Projection
The Madrid-born director feels very "excited" about this new production, which will be shown at other festivals, taking advantage of the momentum from San Sebastián.
The Buenos Aires Festival and other international festivals have already shown strong interest in screening "Jaén, Virgen & Extra,” and this international release will turn the province of Jaén into a true showcase for Extra Virgin Olive Oil, the healthiest vegetable fat, making Jaén the world capital of this product.
