Organic olive oil to protect the environment

Aceite de oliva ecológico para cuidar al medio ambiente

When we talk to people who are interested in extra virgin olive oil or organic olive oil, we often hear that health is the main reason for consuming them. But today we would like to tell you about another reason to switch to an eco lifestyle: our land, the most precious asset we share and which will undoubtedly thank you for buying organic olive oil and other environmentally friendly products.

Why buy organic olive oil?

Conventional agriculture is an economic activity like any other and, as such, seeks to achieve a higher yield from fields and their crops. This approach leads to the use of fertilizers and pesticides that prevent the most common problems in crops (pests or lack of nutrients in the soil). Although these products do not necessarily affect the nutritional qualities of the final food, they can become a problem for the fertility and sustainability of olive groves in the long term.

To put it simply, the land and crops become dependent on the substances we put into them. Thus, organic olive oil and other sustainably produced products seek to avoid environmental consequences such as the reduction of soil fertility or the loss of natural immunity in plants.

Consuming organic olive oil today is a commitment to tomorrow

As in the story of the old man who planted a date palm so that future generations would have dates, choosing sustainable consumption options will prevent soil degradation and make it easier for tomorrow's farmers to continue obtaining olives and oil from it, without having to resort to artificial fertilizers or even GMOs or patented seeds (again, advances that do not have to be harmful but that should be incorporated with great care).

Organic olive oil from traditional varieties

Organic consumption also means committing to traditional varieties. If we always planted the variety that produces the most kilos per hectare, we would have a very undiversified oil ecosystem, a more boring diet and very few resources to deal with a future pest. The more variety there is of the same crop, the more it has the capacity to adapt and the more likely it is to recover after a hypothetical agricultural disaster.

Conclusions on organic EVOO

So, it is not that organic olive oil is tastier because there are many variables that influence the flavour and it is not 100% clear that all organic olive oil is healthier, since olive oil is healthy in itself and each product is different. But what is clear is that choosing organic olive oil is a way of taking care of ourselves, our landscapes and our farmers .
